Compliance
Hardly a day goes by in this day and age without hearing or reading words like “compliance,” “corporate social responsibility (CSR),” and “environmental protection.” But in reality these are often little more than mere catch-phrases, and the actual deeds do no live up to the hype. For example, we believe that the word “recycling,” which is our business, includes a wide interpretation of the word, such things as environmental responsibility and abiding by laws. But, it is all too easy for a corporation to place too much priority on immediate profits and act negligently or in direct violation of the laws due to either the complexity of the laws or mere ignorance thereof.
We believe that in reality many people who do not have professional knowledge of criminal and commercial laws or legislative guidelines will only question in passing: “this wouldn’t be against the law would it?” or “surely I have not made a bad decision, have I? …or is there anything I may have overlooked?”
Metaldo has been accredited under the “Basel Law,” and we have also acquired the AQSIQ certification required for exporting scrap materials to China. We have experienced situations where we have had to deal with radioactive materials and have gone through the legal processes thereof. We have a minimal knowledge of export control regulations including the “catch-all controls” or “Security Trade Control (Foreign exchange law).” We are also endeavoring to comply with standards and reporting obligations regarding the installation of equipment for the various business processes inside the 1st distribution center, but we realize that there is still room for improvement across the organization as a whole.
